Gone Bad - Gone Bad

Following up a slew of demos and live “bootlegs” offered on their website, Brooklyn’s Gone Bad come roaring out of the gate on their first official release: a strong 4-song EP of their posi-aggressive straight-ahead punk rock. Frontwoman Coco Roy is front and center for the entirety of this 7”: from the excellent silver-on-black cover art to her commanding four count on the first track, she never lets up, sounding, at various points, like she could be Lemmy’s long-lost niece or an American Poly Styrene. She’s developed a varied style, landing vocal acrobatics that see her jumping from full-throated hollering to an almost-hushed, Danzig-esque croon. The band also seems to enjoy a confidence here that I haven’t picked up on since I started listening to them. New bassist Avi Paul Weinstein and guitarist Emily Gaenacopoulos are locked to Andy Rodgers drums, staking out similar sonic territory to Damaged-era Black Flag, with hints of classic and hard rock thrown in for good measure. On Side A, “Midnight Love” flows almost seamlessly into “Let the Poison Out,” the band egging the listener on with the fluid tempo/song change while Coco spits out verses or shouts each chorus like a call to arms. Riff-heavy songs “Dirtbag” and “Stranger Danger” keep the party going on Side B, wrapping up with a last-minute threat from Coco: “I’m gonna getcha!” All of these tunes are thoroughly anthemic, though live it seemed like the audience was too spellbound with Coco’s antics (jumping, running in place, pushing herself across the floor on her back, barreling through the crowd with a 40-foot orange and green mic cable in tow) to fist-pump along to most of the set. Overall, I think I’m most impressed with how Gone Bad has managed to translate the energy of that live show, and the raw exuberance of their early demos , into such a cohesive EP. It’s raw without being sloppy, it’s heavy while staying inclusive (“fuck it all, let’s rock”-style), and well-worth picking up a copy online or at their next show. (Self-Released, 2011)
