The German Measles’ “What Goes On,” from last spring’s A German Joke is No Laughing Matter on What’s Yr Rupture?
As I’ve always understood it, GM sprang from the ashes of the beloved caUSE co-MOTION, and it’s songs like this that act as a reminder of that genesis. Some analog signal snow and a hasty four-count kickoff a video featuring precariously stacked TVs flashing zoom-happy shots of the band playing along. Meanwhile, a cat slinks around the sets, wandering in and out of a busted German Measles bass drum under the gaze of cartoon memorabilia, a lit sparkler glinting off part of a disco ball nearby. The visuals correspond nearly perfectly to the stop-start, colorfully scattered nature of the Measles’ signature shambolic punk pop, which is prominently on display here.
